I feel like special consideration needs to be taken when you're shopping for a winter coat. Is that just me? Think about it - You're choosing this one garment to not only function in cold weather conditions to keep you warm, but to also look good while doing so. I know not everyone cares if their coat is equal amounts fashion and function, but for those of you who do, this post is for you!
Right now I'm wearing a military-inspired jacket that Mike outgrew. It's from the men's section and despite the intended customer, it fits like a dream. Coat shopping is not easy for me. My hips are far wider than my upper body so springing for a straight-silhouette peacoat is just not happening, even though I'd love that because they're perfect for every occasion. I'm sure gals with larger busts have an equally challenging time finding the perfect winter outerwear. With that in mind, I created a short list of some of my favorite men's coats and women's coats currently available at JCPenney. Check them out!

The Kate Middleton: The navy and white horizontal bands of this peacoat instantly made me think of Duchess Kate. It's classy and feminine, two traits that the new royal herself embodies. // The Working Man: maybe it's because I live in the South and these types of jackets are totally common on farm boys, but I love this look. It's rustic enough to be sexy, but still totally cold-weather appropriate.

The Military Beauty: I can totally see this gorgeous military coat on a fashion-industry insider jaunting through London's busy streets on her way to a photo shoot. Did I get too crazy there? The clean lines and sparkling buttons are perfect for a gal wanting to make a (subtle) statement. // The Varsity Jock: let's take it back to high school with this one! This IZOD jacket is the perfect reminder of your high school sweetheart. The colors are very All-American, too!

The Classy Cape: I always thought capes would be the perfect solution to my larger-than-life hips when it came to coats. There's something about them that screams "Elegance!" ya know? This shimmery cranberry color is divine. // The Business Casual: maybe it's just the pants and tee that the blazer is being paired with, but I instantly see Paul Rudd's character from Anchorman in this one! Do you see it?!

The Camo Cutie: I've always avoided camouflage like the plague, mainly because it's 100% associated to hunting where I grew up. Guys would come to school all decked out in their camo gear after a morning spent in the woods. Now that I've distanced myself from those day to day happenings, I can totally appreciate the casual, military vibe. This jacket is high on my list of wants! // The Everyman: The classic peacoat is the perfect jacket for almost every man out there. You don't have to be headed to Sunday morning service to wear this one. Whether your every day style is preppy, uber casual, or business savvy, the peacoat has you covered!

The New York City Gal: I feel like this peppered toggle coat is totally an urban city girl's ideal outerwear. It's dressy enough to fit a more upscale outing, but it can still be easily dressed down with some skinny jeans and flats. // The Biker Boy: How can you look at this jacket and not instantly start singing "Greased Lightning?" I'm imagining a slicked back 'do and a comb in the back pocket!

The Fashionista: If you read any amount of fashion blogs, you've undoubtedly seen this (faux) fur vest and belt combo out there, right? I've seen it paired with sleek LBD, leather mini skirts, and cigarette jeans. There are a variety of ways to dress this one, but let's be real: I'd look like a furry acorn if I wore it! // The Regular Joe: I have a soft spot for this one. The regular ol' military green jacket... Maybe because it's what both Mike and I wear. I've gotta admit - I love Mike in his. He just looks so handsome, without even trying! Toss a scarf or beanie and you're set for the winter!
What about you? What coat would you say fits your style the best? I'll totally admit I want the Biker Boy and Varsity Jock jackets myself! I guess I need to go find something slightly more appropriate for the alarmingly cold weather headed our way...
